Climate change is generally an accepted fact, but the average person doesn’t know the science that backs it. Even more disconcerting, is the number of people that believe that it either is not real or that it won't affect the way we live. So here is the basic science that backs up climate change. Rising Temperature Since the late 19th century, the earth’s average temperature has increased by 0.9 degrees Celsius (1.62 F). With most of this increase occurring in the last 35 years, in fact, the five warmest years on record were after 2010 (140-year history of recorded global temperatures). The reconstructed temperature scale over the last 2000 years is constructed by analysis of tree rings, ice cores and coral growth among multiple other subjects. This scale also demonstrates that we are in an unusually hot period. The earth is currently in an approximately 12,000-year-old stage called Holocene. This scale shows an average which has seen the temperature anomalies that we are witnessing current day, particularly to colder temperatures at the beginning of the period which meets the ending of the last glacial period. However, the steep rise of the temperature in the short space of time that we have witnessed is not normal. It indicates a human factor. Carbon Dioxide Link The greenhouse effect is not only well observed but is based on the fundamentals of mathematics, physics, chemistry and astronomy. The relationship between carbon dioxide and global temperatures over the last 400,000 years is well established. The worrying thing is that historically the earth has never had more than about 300 ppm of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (parts per million, a standard chemistry measure of concentration). In 1950, we exceeded 300ppm, and as of November 2018, the measurement is at 410ppm. Rising Sea Level and Melting Ice Sheets A rise in sea level is largely caused by two factors, melting ice sheets and expansion of seawater as it heats up. Since 1993, sea levels have risen
